by Red Wolf"Are you sure we can't be seen?" Rose looked across what should have been rolling hills of grassland. Instead, there was a churned landscape of mud, littered with bodies and the detritus of war. The wind swung around, bringing with it the smell of blood and death, and the groans of the dying.
Rose shivered and the Doctor took her hand. "It's a simulacra of the futility of war. The people wanted to remind their descendents of the price paid in blood. To make them find another way."
"Did they learn?" Rose looked up at the Doctor.
"They never do."

People do seem to be incredibly stupid over not learning from the past — via LiveJournal

I have less faith in humans to get things right en masse. Mostly, they're too busy being led around by the nose by whoever has the biggest stick.

How sad it is that this is so unfortunately true. We never learn. And this captures it really well — via LiveJournal

I kind of like that idea, of having what amounts to a real battlefield, complete with gore, smells and screams, to send our schoolchildren through. Sadly, though, I'm forced to conclude it wouldn't make any difference to the dictators and madmen who start wars in the first place — via fanfiction.net
