That is what I despise about soaps, lol! The actors suck, the writers suck. The plotlines suck. But the worst thing of all about them is that you end up knowing the plotlines if you have nothing else to watch! Oh, the horror! Lol. :) — via LiveJournal

I won't go into the horror of Australian soaps, but the US daytime soaps are bizarre. You can go back to watching them years later and they're still on the same plotline, although some times the actors are different.
The formatting of US daytime soaps is also strange. It's carefully broken down into small fragments, so absolutely nothing can progress. Yeah, it borders on the absurd. It's like the writers wonder to themselves, "Which character do we kill off? And how many different ways can we kill them off? Have we killed them off this way before?" Ugh. I do respect how the actors are able to memorize a new script nearly every day. Other than that, just...euhgghgh.
As for Australian soaps, I dare not wonder. Sounds like they're dreadful, too, hehe. But if they're airing ours where you live, then I apologize on behalf of all my fellow American soap-haters. :D
Yeah, I noticed that lack of progression thing the last time the Dish was turned off and I couldn't find anything else. It really surprised me, because I somehow ended up actually paying attention to the whole episode, and when it ended, I was left with this feeling of utter pointlessness. I'm thinking of what that says about the attention span/apparent intelligence of the average adult American (another good test of this is how many of us know our own national anthem), and it makes me glad I'm not average. For some reason the Brits go nuts for Australian soaps. This still strikes me as insane considering some of the quality stuff they send our way, but they took Kylie Minogue away, so yay.
Neighbours is an appallingly bad local soap. I heard recently that the scripts had been sold to a US company to be remade with a US cast. I'm struggling to think of a good US remake that involves studio monkeys. So imagine any tiny fragment of goodness that exists in those scripts, dumbed down to where some studio exec thinks the US audience will get it. I don't expect it to survive beyond pilot.
But saying that, the morons at Warner Bros passed on Global Frequency, so they'd probably love Neighbours.

Trial By Juryyet. But there has been a disgusting increase of reality shows over the past few years that seriously needs to call it quits.
