Ambiguity

Ambiguityby Red Wolf

It hadn't taken Rose long to discover that the TARDIS library was as eclectic as the Doctor. A quick poke about the shelves had turned up Dickens, Shakespeare, dog-earred and coffee stained bodice rippers and a huge quantity of comics. And that was just the fiction section.

She didn't get comics and certainly didn't understand the lycra obsession that had existed before the fabric was invented.

While the TARDIS could hide in plain sight, a man in a purple bodysuit was only going to go unnoticed in a gay pride parade. Maybe the Ghost Who Walks had another secret identity.

Am slightly confused about this. You're referring to the Phantom, right? Is the joke intended to be that he might have been like the Doctor? — via LiveJournal — posted by Elizabeth Culmer at 22.10.2005 16:27 AEST | #

I've just always wondered why someone would think a purple bodysuit would make for nifty jungle camouflage. As the centrepiece on a float at the Sydney Mardi Gras, yes; but not as a jungle guardian — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:28 AEST | #

Maybe a jungle with hallocinogenic purple flowers...? — via LiveJournal — posted by Elizabeth Culmer at 22.10.2005 16:29 AEST | #

Who in their right mind frolics about the jungle in purple tights and claims to be a superhero? — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:30 AEST | #

Well... it must have seemed a good idea at the time... — via LiveJournal — posted by IrishVampire13 at 22.10.2005 16:30 AEST | #

:D it's so true! — via LiveJournal — posted by dark_pheonix at 22.10.2005 16:32 AEST | #

It pretty much holds true for most of the spandex brigade — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:32 AEST | #

Which usually leads them to change into the black leather and rubber brigade for realistic films, heh..

Nice drabble! — via LiveJournal — posted by Rob Vincent at 22.10.2005 16:33 AEST | #

Or is that just Patrick Stewart? The man does seem to gravitate to roles that require he climb into a rubber suit, which is always to be encouraged — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:34 AEST | #

Nah, it's that Rose — she's a chav and wouldn't get comic books! ;) — via LiveJournal — posted by Grandmum at 22.10.2005 16:35 AEST | #

And to think she only found the spandex brigade titles. What would she have made of the hentai? — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:36 AEST | #

::teeheehee!:: — via LiveJournal — posted by Grandmum at 22.10.2005 16:41 AEST | #

Good point, and it doesn't even have to be the bad stuff. I haven't been the same since my daughter loaned me Ranma 1/2 and Love Hina — via LiveJournal — posted by Mark at 22.10.2005 16:43 AEST | #

It might have been better if she found Global Frequency or Transmetropolitan or Sandman or The Tale of One Bad Rat. The spandex brigade is hideously repetitive.

I have to laugh at people getting into the spandex brigade now and waffling on about the depth of story in the X-Men. It's the same crap recycled plots they've been running with for the past twenty years. And Joss Whedon deserves a good pummelling with a stick for bringing back Colossus — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:43 AEST | #

Funny you should mention 20 years; that's about how long ago I stopped collecting X-Men.

Personally, my favorite was Kitty Pryde, back in the day. Of course, I was much closer to her age back then.

My daughter's a fairly typical teenager, so a lot of the manga and anime out there is still a bit beyond her limited interests; and since our budget is also limited, if she doesn't get it, I don't get it. I think her pop-culture mind is also why I couldn't get her as interested in Firefly as I was — via LiveJournal — posted by Mark at 22.10.2005 16:50 AEST | #

lol. mmm...wolverine in tight lycra pants... — via LiveJournal — posted by Pheral at 22.10.2005 16:52 AEST | #

Aside from the droolage that image creates, I really couldn't see the character volunteering to wear the crap they draw him in — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 22.10.2005 16:52 AEST | #

'Cause, hey — Africa?

I'd always wondered how the Ghost Who Walks ended up in that outfit to begin with — via LiveJournal — posted by Mark at 14.01.2006 16:18 AEST | #

I suspect the reality is the old four colour comic thing and blue was possibly too close to Superman. Still, his dashing purple bodysuit is still better than the weird Hulk and purple/magenta pants. I think — via LiveJournal — posted by Red Wolf at 14.01.2006 16:19 AEST | #

Well, Hulk could get away with it, because if somebody complained — Hulk Smash.

But the Ghost Who Walks walked strictly in Africa, as I recall, so shouldn't he have been wearing some kind of local and/or traditional outfit? Wouldn't have gone over well with the American reader, I suppose.

I also recall seeing a fairly recent comic strip in which one week his preteen daughter was running around in the same outfit as her brother, and the next week she was suddenly only seen from behind — the USA PC police at work there, I suspect — via LiveJournal — posted by Mark at 14.01.2006 16:20 AEST | #

::laughs:: Lycra. The imagery in this has me giggling — via LiveJournal — posted by Chessie at 14.01.2006 16:26 AEST | #

I cannot stop laughing at the insinuation about the Phantom. especially since I was just a museum and saw an african war shield with the Phantom's face painted on (seriously! Pitt-Rivers Museum, Oxford) — via A Teaspoon And An Open Mind — posted by rea_p at 09.09.2007 22:04 AEST | #

Yeah! more drabbles of true 100 word length. You came recommended, glad to have found your drabbles. I love this tour Rose is taking. I knew the ninth Doctor was a secret comic book reading geek :) Thanks — via A Teaspoon And An Open Mind — posted by Membio at 09.09.2007 22:05 AEST | #
